The owner is a refugee from Afghanistan enrolled in US Together Cleveland’s Microenterprise Development (MED) Program. The owner started his business selling gemstones because he wants to share the beauty and culture of his native Afghanistan with customers here in the United States while also supporting local markets back home.

Sabir’s Gemstones LLC provides quality gemstones, crystals and minerals from Afghanistan. They offer a variety of high-quality stones and beautiful stone decorations including: onyx, calcite, lapis, and tourmaline. They sell gemstone massagers as well as raw gemstones and gemstones shaped like pillars, apples, hearts, balls, stars, moons, and more, which make perfect gifts.

Afghan onyx and calcite is quarried from several provinces including Bamyan, Helmand and Faryab with colors including shades of yellow, green or brown. Helmand is the home of the Nahr-e Saraj canal, which was constructed in 1910. These newly-irrigated areas at the time had previously been desert and became populated with ethnic and tribal groups once irrigated who were not originally from Helmand, including refugees from Central Asia fleeing Soviet rule. Many of the villages along the canal therefore are named after these groups, such as Uzbek, Turkmen, and Popolzai. Helmand was also the center of the USAID program in the 1960s to develop the Helmand and Arghandab Valley Authority (HAVA); it became known locally as "little America.” Bamyan Province is one of the thirty-four provinces of Afghanistan located in the central highlands of the country. Its terrain is mountainous or semi-mountainous and it is located at the western end of the Hindu Kush mountains, which are concurrent with the Himalayas. Faryab is one of the thirty-four provinces of Afghanistan, which is located in the north of the country bordering neighboring Turkmenistan.
