The Impact of Volunteering

At the 46th Annual International Taste of Columbus in August, we featured two volunteers who told their stories of giving back to the community through US Together. Although their backgrounds are so different (Robert is a retiree, Teryn is just beginning college) and although they volunteer in different ways (Robert teaches a job readiness class, Teryn serves as a conversation partner) their experiences underscore the universal value of volunteering and service to others.

As Teryn said of her experience working with an English language learner from Mexico, “I’m really thankful for this experience as a conversation partner, because it’s allowed me to recognize how two people from different walks of life can share so much in common…”

And as Robert said, “Volunteering helps me realize how fortunate I am to be an American citizen, and I see in the stories and struggles of new immigrants a reflection of the story of my own family. Volunteering strengthens our city and our country and is good for you personally. You use skills you have in the service of others. ”

Additionally, Robert and Teryn both stressed the fact that COVID-19 has not stopped them from volunteering. Both have found creative ways to continue their service virtually! Watch their videos below to hear more of their incredible stories.

We are so grateful that Robert and Teryn have chosen to serve as volunteers. If their stories inspire you to get involved, click below to learn more about our volunteer and internship opportunities, or support us by donating!
