US Together Official Statement: President Biden Raising Refugee Admissions Cap to 62,500
For the first time in more than four years, the ceiling for refugee admissions is being increased. After several rounds of devastating cuts, including last year’s reduction to an all-time low of just 15,000, President Biden has officially raised the refugee admissions cap for this fiscal year to 62,500. US Together applauds this announcement and recognizes that it is a significant step toward restoring the United States’ long, bipartisan history of welcome. With more displaced persons in the world than at any point in history, full restoration of the US Refugee Admissions Program (USRAP) is simply the right thing to do.
In the words of US Together Co-Founder and Director Nadia Kasvin:
“There is much work to be done to bring our refugee resettlement program to its full capacity. And even though we might not be able to receive 62,500 arrivals until September 30 of this year, our efforts in the next several months will set us on a path to rebuilding refugee admissions and lay a groundwork for increased welcoming capacity in the future.”
In the coming months, the US Together staff in Columbus, Cleveland, and Toledo look forward to not only continuing, but growing, the wraparound services we have provided to refugees, immigrants, and asylum-seekers for more than 18 years.
