First Ever Refugee Kid's Camp

Reading Camp and Competition

This June, US Together’s Toledo office hosted its First Annual Kid’s Reading Camp and Competition. This week-long camp provided students aged 6-13 with the opportunity to develop their reading skills and explore different styles of books. At the end, all 21 participants created a poster inspired by the stories they read and the connections they made with the characters in the book.

The camp, run by Bashar Al Hariri, the director of our Toledo ESL program, was made possible by a generous donation of books by the Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society at the University of Toledo, as well as the assistance of several dedicated volunteers.

US Together was able to provide each of the youth participants in the camp free, nutritious lunches throughout the week through a partnership with Connecting Kids to Meals, a local organization committed to fighting hunger in Northwest Ohio.

 We are so proud of our students’ hard work during this week and their drive to improve their English skills. This camp was all about empowering our refugee youth to gain confidence in English, allowing them to talk about their ideas and inspirations, and grow into their bright futures as New Americans.
